Alaska is a Hamburg-based indie-pop group formed in 1994 under the name Mrs. Wallace. The original lineup consisted of vocalist and guitarist Torben Schmieder, bassist Christoph Martens, and drummer Carsten Schreiber. Under their original name, they released the self-distributed EP Sense E.P. (1996), which blended indie-pop and shoegaze. In 1998, the band signed with Marsh-Marigold Records, adopted the name Alaska, and issued the single “Kings of the Class” (1999) the following year. Their debut album, Nouveau Liberty (2005), appeared in 2005, and the video for the single “She Was a Rockstar” (2005) was featured on a SPEX promotional DVD. In 2014, the band released These Sacred Floors (2014), recorded by a lineup of Martens, Patrick Menck, Carsten Lienke, Schmieder, and Björn Steffens. They followed with the EP Whitewash the Tidemarks (2018), which featured guitarist Stephan Dublasky. The group is part of the German indie scene.
