Ed Spanjaard is a Dutch conductor and pianist born as Eduard Philip Spanjaard on December 22, 1948, in Haarlem. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by classical and contemporary repertoire and for his leadership of the Nieuw Ensemble. Spanjaard achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and served as an assistant to conductor Herbert von Karajan. He achieved professional recognition for serving as a répétiteur for the Royal Opera House and conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra during the Glyndebourne Festival in 1978. His recording career began in 1975 and included serving as the principal conductor of the Nieuw Ensemble since 1982. Spanjaard achieved professional recognition for being appointed the chief conductor of the Limburgs Symfonie Orkest in 2001 and conducting the premiere of the opera Pelléas et Mélisande at the Opéra National de Lyon in 2004. His discography included the studio recording Tango Royal (2012) and the studio recording Mozart – Arias (2010). Spanjaard achieved professional recognition for serving as the musical director for the wedding of Prince Willem-Alexander and Máxima Zorreguieta in 2002. He achieved professional recognition for receiving the Edison Award in 1999 and 2001. Spanjaard achieved professional recognition for being appointed a professor of orchestral conducting at the Amsterdam University of the Arts in 2012 and the chief conductor of the Orkest van het Oosten starting in 2017.
