The Brunettes, an indie pop group from New Zealand, were formed in Auckland in 1998 by Jonathan Bree and Heather Mansfield. The band independently released its first recording, the Mars Loves Venus EP, in 1998. In 2002, Bree founded Lil' Chief Records with Scott Mannion of The Tokey Tones, and the label's debut release was The Brunettes' album Holding Hands, Feeding Ducks. They gained recognition for their subsequent albums, including Mars Loves Venus (2004) and Structure & Cosmetics (2007). They opened for notable acts such as Rilo Kiley and Beirut. In 2008, they contributed "Lovesong", a cover of The Cure's track, to the tribute compilation Just Like Heaven. The group released their album, Paper Dolls, in 2009 before disbanding later that year. In 2010, their song "Red Rollerskates" was included on the soundtrack of the 2K Sports video game NBA 2K11.
