Otmar Suitner was an Austrian conductor born on May 16, 1922, in Innsbruck. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by Austro-German repertoire and for serving as the general music director at the Berlin State Opera. Suitner achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he studied at the Mozarteum under the musician Franz Ledwinka and the musician Clemens Krauss. He achieved professional recognition for serving as a ballet repetiteur and conducting the opera Rigoletto in 1944. Suitner achieved professional recognition for being appointed the general music director of the Pfalzorchesters in 1957 and serving as the chief conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden from 1960 to 1964. He achieved professional recognition for his tenure at the Berlin State Opera between 1964 and 1991 and conducting at the Bayreuth Festival. His recording career included the first cycle of symphonies by composer Ludwig van Beethoven to be released on compact disc. Suitner achieved professional recognition for receiving the National Prize of the German Democratic Republic in 1963 and 1982. He became inactive in 1990 and died on January 8, 2010.
