Jacques Vidal, born on October 13, 1949, in Athis-Mons, France, is a French bassist known for his contributions to modern jazz. At 17, he began exploring jazz and took a drumming course with Kenny Clarke before switching to the double bass, which he studied at the Versailles Conservatory. Vidal's early career included a stint with Magma from 1969 to 1970 and tours with notable artists such as Philly Joe Jones and Pepper Adams. In the late 1970s, he began collaborating with Frédéric Sylvestre in various ensemble formats, releasing five albums together during the 1980s. Vidal formed his own quintet in 1995, focusing on the works of Charles Mingus, and released four albums, including Mingus Spirit (2007) and Fables Of Mingus (2011). Throughout his career, he has also accompanied artists like Christian Escoudé, Lee Konitz, Mal Waldron, Byard Lancaster, Joachim Kühn, and Glenn Ferris.
