Merlons Lichter was a German medieval rock and folk band from Erlangen established in 1992. The group was founded under the name The Merlons of Nehemiah by vocalist and hurdy-gurdy player Andreas “P.G.” Haensel and guitarist and violinist Fritz Schmitz, later adding bassist and vocalist Peter Henrici and drummer Markus Möck. Their recording career began with the debut studio recording Cantoney (1993), which introduced a medieval-influenced folk sound despite several production errors. They subsequently released the studio recording Eluoami (1994), which developed a style they characterized as medieval mystic folk crossover. After renaming themselves The Merlons and later Merlons, they released the studio recordings Romanoir (1995), Water Naked Nature (1997), Trance (1998), Sinn-Licht (1998), and Midgard (1999). Following the departure of vocalist Antje Haensel in 2000, the group renamed themselves Merlons Lichter and transitioned to a heavier, guitar-driven rock sound. They released the studio recordings Die Wahre Mutter Gottes (2001) and Lust (2005) before disbanding. Haensel subsequently joined the group Ignis Fatuu in 2012, and Henrici founded the medieval rock band Feuerschwanz.
