The Mark of Cain, formed in Adelaide, South Australia, in mid‑1984 by brothers John Scott and Kim Scott, emerged from a punk backdrop and adopted a heavier, metal‑influenced sound. Their debut single, "The Lords of Summer", appeared on Phantom Records in 1988, setting the stage for the release of the first album, Battlesick, in August 1989 under Dominator Records. The band followed with The Unclaimed Prize in February 1991, and the EP Incoming in June 1993, produced by Steve Albini. In November 1995, the album Ill at Ease was issued on rooArt, reaching Number 73 on the ARIA charts and spawning singles "First Time" and "LMA". After a series of lineup changes, drummer John Stanier joined in 2000, and the trio released This Is This in June 2001, peaking at Number 26 on the ARIA Charts. A decade later, Songs of the Third and Fifth was released on 2 December 2012, marking the band's continued presence. The group celebrated the 30th anniversary of Battlesick in 2019 with a national tour and re‑issue, and was inducted into the South Australian Music Hall of Fame in 2022.
