Birgit Thora Marie-Louise Brüel, born October 6, 1927, in Copenhagen, was a Danish actress and singer best known as one of Denmark's early modern jazz vocalists. She first gained recognition performing with Max Brüel's quartet and became a familiar presence on Danish radio and television. Alongside her solo recordings, she also sang with the vocal ensemble Pigerne, featuring Inge Østergaard and sisters Grete and Tove Kemp, and later released several LPs during the 1960s and 1970s, including Dame I Danmark (1967) and Jazz På Dansk (1975). A notable achievement came in 1965 when she won the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix with "For din skyld," written by Jørgen Jersild and Poul Henningsen. The song represented Denmark at the Eurovision Song Contest 1965, where it finished seventh, further establishing her reputation as one of Denmark's leading vocalists.
