Richard Verreault, known professionally as Richard Verreau, was born on January 1, 1926, in Château-Richer, Quebec. He studied classical singing at Université Laval and debuted professionally in 1951 with the Opéra de Lyon. Verreau's career included notable performances at the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Covent Garden, and San Francisco Opera. His rendition of "Minuit, chrétiens" became a beloved holiday classic in Quebec. Verreau faced vocal cord issues in the mid-1960s, shifting his focus towards painting. He passed away on July 6, 2005, leaving behind a significant body of work, including his acclaimed recording of La Damnation de Faust with Deutsche Grammophon under Igor Markevitch's direction.
