William Toliver Carlisle, known as Bill Carlisle, and born on December 19, 1908, in Wakefield, Kentucky, was a country music singer-songwriter and guitarist. He started his music career in the 1920s performing with his older brother Cliff Carlisle on radio stations WLAP-AM and WNOX-AM. His first solo single "Rattlesnake Daddy" was released in 1933. In 1946, after signing with King Records, he had a hit with "A Rainbow at Midnight". Bill Carlisle's solo hit "Tramp on the Street" was released in 1948. He moved to Minden, Louisiana, in 1953 and formed the Carlisles backing ensemble. Carlisle joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1953 and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in September 2002. He passed away on March 17, 2003, in Nashville, Tennessee.
