West Indian Girl is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, established in 2004. The ensemble was founded by vocalist and guitarist Robert James and bassist Francis Ten, who reached professional recognition after meeting in Detroit in the early 1990s and collaborating by mail. The group reached professional recognition for a musical style that incorporates elements of dream pop, neo-psychedelia, and space rock. Their recording career began with the debut eponymous studio recording West Indian Girl (2004) through the label Astralwerks. The ensemble subsequently released the collection Remix EP (2006) followed by the studio recording 4th & Wall (2007) through the label Milan Records. In 2007, the group reached wider visibility after signing a digital distribution contract with the company Flycell and releasing the single “Blue Wave”. Their discography included the compilation recording We Believe (2009) and the studio recording Shangri La (2013). Past members of the ensemble included keyboardist Chris Carter and vocalist Mariqueen Maandig.
