Alpinestars was an electronic rock duo formed in Manchester in 1999 by Richard Woolgar and Glyn Thomas, who had met in 1995 while rehearsing in the same Manchester rehearsal space. Their early collaboration, initially called “Maxim,” led to a rapid performance opportunity at a local club, after which they adopted the name Alpinestars and signed with Faith and Hope Records. The duo debuted with the limited‑edition EP Las Vegas in August 1999, followed by Silicon Chick in November 1999 and Kitzbuhel Weekend in March 2000; the latter’s single earned “Single of the Week” status in NME. In July 2000 they released the commercial single "77 Sunset Strip", and in September 2000 issued their first full‑length album B.A.S.I.C., which was reissued in 2003 by Guidance Recordings. After leaving Faith and Hope in 2001, Alpinestars released their second album White Noise in 2002 through Riverman Records and Astralwerks, featuring vocals from Placebo’s Brian Molko on "Carbon Kid". The duo’s tracks appeared in video games such as Midnight Club II and Project Gotham Racing 3. Alpinestars disbanded in 2003, concluding a brief but active period of electronic music production.
