Skint & Demoralised was formed in 2007 by Wakefield‑born lyricist Matt Abbott, who performed stand‑up poetry before meeting producer MiNI dOG on MySpace; Abbott wrote lyrics while MiNI dOG composed music and produced demos. Their breakthrough came with the 2008 single "The Thrill Of Thirty Seconds", followed by "Red Lipstick" in July 2009, which entered the UK Singles Chart at Number 100 and received extensive BBC Radio 1 airplay. In 2008 the duo signed to Mercury Records and recorded their debut album Love And Other Catastrophes at Daptone Studios in Brooklyn and RAK Studios in London, though the album was leaked and never officially released by Mercury; it eventually appeared on Heist Or Hit in August 2011. The same year they issued the second album This Sporting Life and embarked on a UK tour supporting Art Brut and John Cooper Clarke. A third studio effort, The Bit Between The Teeth, was released digitally in April 2013, after which the band announced a final split. After a six‑year hiatus, Skint & Demoralised returned in March 2019 with the single "Boro Kitchen 4am" on Fierce Panda, leading to the album We Are Humans in August 2019, which was distributed digitally and on limited white vinyl. The group has performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury, Reading, and Latitude, and has maintained a presence on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Radio 1 through several years.
