Engerica, an English alternative rock group formed in Essex in 2000, was led by David Gardner on lead vocals and guitar, Mike Webster on bass and backing vocals, and Neil‑Ross Gregory on drums and percussion; the trio emerged from a local scene that blended metal, grunge and punk influences. Their first public appearance came in December 2000, followed by the self‑released single "The Detective Show" and the independently issued "Trick or Treat" in 2003 on Wrath Records, which helped secure a contract with London‑based Infectious Records; the band released the single "The Smell" through the same label before signing with Sanctuary Records in January 2005. Under Sanctuary, Engerica recorded its sole album, There Are No Happy Endings, which was released on 13 March 2006 after a delayed production schedule; the album incorporated re‑recorded versions of earlier singles and received mixed reviews, while the re‑issue of "The Smell" supported a short UK tour. The group was featured on the Metal Hammer Awards 2006 DVD and nominated for “Best British Newcomer 2006,” though the award went to another act. Engerica announced its split on 23 August 2006 and played its final, sold‑out Halloween‑themed show on 26 October 2006 at Chinnerys in Southend‑on‑Sea, marking the end of the band’s brief but distinct presence in the UK alternative rock scene.
