Jerome Lowenthal

Jerome Lowenthal, born February 11, 1932, in Philadelphia, is an American pianist. He debuted publicly at age 13 with the Philadelphia Orchestra and studied at the Curtis Institute of Music under Olga Samaroff. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Paris with Alfred Cortot in 1956. Lowenthal's breakthrough came in 1957 when he shared second place at the International Piano Competition Ferruccio Busoni and won first prize at the Kranichstein Music Prize. In 2016, his recording The People United Will Never Be Defeated! by Frederic Rzewski was nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Classical Instrumental Solo category. Lowenthal also became a professor at the Juilliard School in 1990 and has held an honorary doctorate from the Cleveland Institute of Music.
