Raymond Byron Magic Raposa, who performed as Castanets, was an American singer, songwriter, and musician who was born in 1981 in Michigan City. He grew up in San Diego and began a musical career with the free-jazz project Womb. After releasing the CD-R What Kind of Cure (2002), he signed with Asthmatic Kitty Records. His debut studio album, Cathedral, was released (2004) followed by the album First Light's Freeze (2005). Raposa was a prominent figure in the American freak folk movement of the early 2000s. His recordings include the albums In the Vines (2007), City of Refuge (2008), Texas Rose, the Thaw, and the Beasts (2009), and Decimation Blues (2014). He collaborated with artists including Sufjan Stevens and Rafter Roberts. Raposa died in 2022.
