Marion Cletus Cannon Jr., known professionally as Chuck Cannon, was an American country music songwriter born and raised in South Carolina. Inspired by local folk songs from a young age, Cannon moved to Nashville in 1984 to attend Belmont University. By 1988, he secured a songwriting contract. One of his first notable compositions was "I Love the Way You Love Me", a Number 1 hit for John Michael Montgomery in 1993, which won the Song of the Year award at the Academy of Country Music awards. Cannon then began working primarily with Toby Keith, contributing to hits such as "How Do You Like Me Now?!", the Number 1 country song of the year according to the Billboard Year-End charts in 2000. He also self-released two albums, God-Shaped Hole and Love and Money.
