Frederik Devreese, born on June 2, 1929, in Amsterdam, was a Belgian composer known for his orchestral, chamber, and piano works. He received initial musical training from his father, Godfried Devreese, and studied composition with Marcel Poot and René Defossez in Brussels. Devreese gained recognition through film scores such as "Un Soir Un Train" by André Delvaux and The Cruel Embrace by Marion Hänsel. He composed the required work for the Reine Elisabeth music competition in Brussels (1983, Concerto No. 4). Devreese served as conductor of the BRT Philharmonic Orchestra and guest-conducted orchestras worldwide. He received several awards, including the Prijs Oostende Piano Competition (1949) and Prix Italia (1964). He was knighted by Albert II of Belgium in 1996. Devreese passed away on September 28, 2020.
