James Anderson DePreist, born in Philadelphia on 21 November 1936, was one of the first African-American conductors to perform internationally. After studying composition with Vincent Persichetti and earning a degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he participated in a 1962 State Department cultural exchange tour through which he had his first experience conducting in Thailand. He later won the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Conducting Competition and became an assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic during the 1965-1966 season. He made his European debut with the Rotterdam Philharmonic in 1969 and became the associate conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra (1971), and music director of Orchestre Symphonique de Québec (1976–83) and the Oregon Symphony (1980–2003). He received the Ditson Conductor's Award (2000) and the National Medal of Arts (2005). DePreist died on 8 February 2013 at age 76.
