Sterling Magee, known as Mister Satan (May 20, 1936 – September 6, 2020), and Adam Gussow formed the American blues duo Satan and Adam in the late 1980s. Originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, Magee began his career as a guitarist and songwriter, recording several near-hits on Ray Charles's Tangerine label in the early 1960s. He later adopted the stage name Mister Satan and performed as a one-man band on the streets of Harlem. Gussow, a Princeton graduate and harmonica player, joined Magee after encountering him during street performances. Their initial notoriety came in 1987 when U2 filmed them for their documentary Rattle and Hum, featuring Magee's composition "Freedom for My People". The duo released their debut album, Harlem Blues, in 1991. They toured extensively across the United States and internationally, performing at various festivals. In 1998, Magee's nervous breakdown led to the duo's dissolution.
