Strawpeople were formed in 1985 by Paul Casserly and Mark Tierney in Auckland, New Zealand, after meeting while working at the university radio station now known as 95 bFM. The duo’s early work culminated in the 1990 single "One Good Reason", a cover of The Swingers, which preceded their debut studio album Hemisphere (1991). The follow‑up Worldservice (1992) included the charting single "Have a Little Faith" and the track "Wings of Desire", which featured Jane Fonda audio and appeared in the 1995 film To Die For. In 1994, Broadcast reached number seven on the New Zealand albums chart, and the single "Sweet Disorder" earned the 1995 APRA Silver Scroll Award and the 1996 New Zealand Music Award for Songwriting; the song later entered the APRA Top 100 New Zealand Songs of All Time. After Mark Tierney’s departure in 1996, Paul Casserly continued with vocalist Victoria Kelly, producing Vicarious (1996), which peaked at number four and won Album of the Year at the 1997 New Zealand Music Awards. Subsequent releases included the remix album 100 Street Transistors (1997), No New Messages (2000), the cover of "Drive" featuring Bic Runga, and Count Backwards from 10 (2004). In August 2023, Strawpeople issued Knucklebones, their first album in two decades, recorded at Bigpop Studios with long‑time collaborators.
