James Hubert "Eubie" Blake, born on February 7, 1887 in Baltimore, Maryland, was a pianist and composer. He began playing piano at age 15 and made his first recordings in 1917 for the Pathé record label. Blake collaborated with Noble Sissle from 1921 to 1927, writing Shuffle Along, one of the first Broadway musicals by African Americans. Notable songs from this period include "I'm Just Wild About Harry" and "Love Will Find a Way". In 1978, Eubie!, a Broadway musical showcasing his works, was released. President Ronald Reagan awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1981. Blake passed away on February 12, 1983.
