Tananas, a South African music group formed in 1987, consisted of Gito Baloi on bass and vocals, Ian Herman on drums and percussion, and Steve Newman on acoustic guitar. The band's debut album, Tananas, released in 1988, blended jazz, Mozambican salsa, and township jive, establishing their unique sound. They built a loyal following in South Africa from the late 1980s and performed at WOMAD festivals worldwide. Tananas collaborated with notable artists such as Paul Simon and Sting, and shared stages with Bonnie Raitt, Suzanne Vega, and Youssou N'dour. The group released eight albums, including Seed (1999) and Alive in Jo'Burg (2001), before disbanding in 1993. Baloi was tragically shot and killed on April 4, 2004, at the age of 39.
