Giovanni Maier is an Italian bassist and composer born on August 26, 1965, in Staranzano. He joined the Transition Jazz Group in 1987 and earned his diploma from the Conservatorio G. Tartini in Trieste the following year. During the late 1980s, Maier became an active figure in the Italian jazz scene, collaborating with notable musicians including Butch Morris, Roscoe Mitchell, Ernst Reijseger, and Richard Galliano. He also performed with Enrico Rava's Electric Five and Pino Minafra's Sud Ensemble. Maier later formed several of his own ensembles, including the Mosaic Orchestra, as well as various duo and trio projects. His Triosonic ensemble released Anything Your Little Heart Says in 2014. In 2009, he joined the faculty of the Conservatorio G. Tartini in Trieste as a lecturer. His notable recordings also include Polaroid (1998) and The Face of the Bass (2003).
