Jason Greenhalgh, who lived on the Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, England, gained recognition as the DJ and drum-and-bass producer known as Q Project. Greenhalgh began his career in the early 1990s, releasing the single "Freestyle Fanatic" in 1991 under the Q Project name, before collaborating with Paul Smith as part of the duo Total Science. Together they formed Funky Technicians in 1994, producing tracks such as "You Gotta Believe", the first in a series of records that pushed the label away from the darkside movement and toward labels like Lucky Spin, Basement, and Good Looking. In 1997 Greenhalgh co-founded the CIA label, and the duo's Silent Reign EP for Goldie's Metalheadz came before a Bad Company remix of "Champion Sound", a popular jungle anthem of the 1990s. Total Science's debut album Advance arrived in 2000, followed by releases including Audio Works 01 (2001), Good Game (2004), and Mars Needs... Total Science (2006). Greenhalgh has also continued to release music as Q Project, with dozens of releases to his name.
