Alphonsus Johannes Maria Diepenbrock was a Dutch composer and conductor born on 2 September 1862 in Amsterdam. Although he received a doctorate in classics in 1888, he devoted himself to music in 1894. As a self-taught composer, his musical style combined 16th-century polyphony and Wagnerian chromaticism with impressionistic elements. His vocal compositions featured texts by poets including Goethe, Baudelaire, and Verlaine. His recording career includes the tracks “De klare dag” (1881) and “Avondzang” (1885). Diepenbrock conducted contemporary works such as Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 at the Concertgebouw. His name is displayed on the first balcony of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. Diepenbrock died on 5 April 1921.
