The Caribbean is an American experimental pop group from Washington, D.C. The group was formed in 1999 as a songwriting and recording project between Michael Kentoff, Matthew Byars, and Tony Dennison. The recording collective grew with the addition of multi-instrumentalist Don Campbell in 2001 and guitarist Dave Jones in 2004. Their early EP recordings, The Caribbean (1999) and William of Orange (2004), established a deconstructionist pop sound blending elements of American pop, indie rock, cool jazz, and Brazilian music. Over the next decade, the group released the albums Populations (2007), Discontinued Perfume (2011), and Moon Sickness (2014), each earning praise from Pitchfork, the Washington Post, and PopMatters, which named Discontinued Perfume the Best Indie-Pop Record of 2011. Their touring spanned the United States and Canada, with performances at South by Southwest, CMJ Music Marathon, North by Northeast, and the Denver Post's Underground Music Showcase, while the single “Vitamin Ship” (2018) and a collaborative album with producer Scott Solter expanded their reach.
