The Bats, a New Zealand rock band formed in 1982 in Christchurch, consisted of Paul Kean on bass, Malcolm Grant on drums, Robert Scott on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Kaye Woodward on lead guitar. The group released their first EP, By Night, in 1984 by Flying Nun Records. Their debut album, Daddy's Highway (1987), is considered one of New Zealand’s best albums of the decade and includes notable tracks like "North by North" and "Block of Wood". The band toured extensively in the US during the 1980s and 1990s. They went on a hiatus in 199 and the compilation album Thousands of Tiny Luminous Spheres was released on Flying Nun Records in 2000. They continued releasing albums like The Guilty Office (2008) and Corner Coming Up (2025).
