The Stargazers were formed in 1949 in England by Cliff Adams, Ronnie Milne, Marie Benson, Fred Datchler, and Dick James, with Dick James leaving shortly after to pursue a solo career. Their early broadcast appearances on BBC Radio programmes, including The Goon Show, established their presence, and the group recorded the 1954 single “I See the Moon”, which reached the UK charts. In the 1950s they signed with Decca and released a series of successful singles, including “Broken Wings” (1953), which became the first British act to top the UK Singles Chart. The group collaborated with Petula Clark and contributed backing vocals for numerous recordings. The Stargazers were voted “most popular vocal group” by New Musical Express readers for five consecutive years, and their legacy continued through compilations of their 1950s recordings.
