Walter Norris was an American pianist and composer born on December 27, 1931, in Little Rock. He achieved professional recognition for a musical career characterized by jazz and for his tenure with the Sender Freies Berlin-Orchestra. Norris achieved professional recognition for a career that began after he studied piano with his mother and performed with the Howard Williams Band. He achieved professional recognition for moving to Los Angeles in 1958 and performing on the debut studio recording Something Else!!!! (1958) by the musician Ornette Coleman. His recording career included the debut studio recording The Trio (1961) followed by the studio recording Drifting (1974) with the musician George Mraz. Norris achieved professional recognition for joining the Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Band in 1974 and moving to Berlin in 1977 to escape a confrontation with the musician Charles Mingus. Her discography included the studio recording Stepping on Cracks (1978) and the studio recording Live at Maybeck Recital Hall, Volume Four (1990). He achieved professional recognition for signing a five-album contract with Concord Records in 1990 and releasing the studio recording Hues of Blues (1995). Norris died on October 29, 2011.
