Thierry Fischer, born on September 28, 1957, in the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (Zambia) to Swiss parents, is an orchestra conductor and flutist. He studied flute with Aurèle Nicolet and began his career as Principal Flute in Hamburg and at the Zurich Opera, where he studied scores with Nikolaus Harnoncourt. His conducting debut occurred in his thirties with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, where he also served as principal flute under Claudio Abbado. He held chief conductor posts with the Netherlands Ballet Orchestra, Ulster Orchestra, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Nagoya Philharmonic, and Utah Symphony, concluding his tenure as Music Director in 2023. His recordings of Frank Martin's Der Sturm, Camille Saint‑Saëns' Complete Symphonies, and Stravinsky have received Gramophone and International Classical Music Award nominations.
