The New Standards is an American minimalist jazz trio formed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 2005. The band includes Chan Poling of the band The Suburbs on piano and vocals, John Munson of the bands Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare on double bass and vocals, and Steve Roehm of Electropolis on vibraphone. The trio gained attention for unique reinterpretations of songs across multiple genres, including the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic “My Favorite Things” and the song “London Calling” by The Clash. Their self-titled debut studio album, The New Standards, was released in September 2005 and produced by Dan Wilson, a former member of Trip Shakespeare and Semisonic. Subsequent albums include Rock and Roll (2008), Sunday Morning Coming Down (2012), and Decade (2015). The trio’s discography also includes the holiday EPs Candy Cane (2007), Christmas Time Next Year (2011), and Seven Songs of Comfort and Joy (2011).
