Daniel Melingo wurde am 22. Oktober 1957 in Buenos Aires, Argentinien, als Daniel Alejandro Melingo geboren und wuchs in Balvanera und Parque Patricios auf. Er absolvierte eine Ausbildung in klassischer Gitarre und Klarinette am Nationalen Konservatorium und machte sich zunächst in der argentinischen Rockszene einen Namen, indem er bei Los Abuelos de la Nada spielte, gemeinsam mit Pipo Cipolatti die Band Los Twist gründete und als Saxophonist mit Charly García zusammenarbeitete, unter anderem auf Piano Bar (1984). Nach einem Aufenthalt in Spanien, wo er die Band „Lions in Love“ gründete und die Alben „Lions in Love“ (1989) sowie „Psicofonías“ (1994) aufnahm, kehrte Daniel Melingo nach Buenos Aires zurück und startete mit „H2O“ (1996) seine Solokarriere. Anschließend wandte er sich als Tangosänger, Songwriter und Bandleader mit „Tangos Bajos“ (1998) neu aus, gefolgt von „Ufa!“ (1999) und der Compilation „Santa Milonga“ (2004). Seine internationale Bekanntheit wuchs durch Tourneen mit Los Ramones del Tango und „Maldito Tango“ (2007), das 2009 mit einem Premio Gardel ausgezeichnet wurde und eine Latin-Grammy-Nominierung als bestes Tango-Album erhielt. Daniel Melingo entwickelte seine theatralische, stark vom Lunfardo geprägte Tangosprache auf Corazón & Hueso (2011), Linyera (2014), Anda (2016) und Oasis (2020) weiter, wobei letzteres eine mit Linyera begonnene Trilogie vollendete. Im Jahr 2022 veröffentlichte er die Anthologie S’il Vous Plaît und präsentierte Ópera Linyera in Buenos Aires. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren arbeitete er an einer Neuinterpretation von Tangos Bajos mit Gästen wie Fito Páez, Andrés Calamaro, Pity Álvarez, Julieta Laso, Maxi Prietto und Pablo Lescano. Daniel Melingo starb am 30. Juni 2026 im Alter von 68 Jahren in Buenos Aires.
