Don Patterson, born on July 22, 1936, in Columbus, Ohio, was an American jazz organist. He began playing piano as a child, influenced by Erroll Garner, but switched to organ in 1956 after hearing Jimmy Smith play. In the early 1960s, Patterson started performing regularly with Sonny Stitt and released his album The Exciting New Organ of Don Patterson on Prestige Records in 1964. His career included notable collaborations with Pat Martino, Billy James, and Booker Ervin, among others. Patterson found success with his album Holiday Soul, which reached number 85 on the Billboard 200 in 1967. Despite struggles with drug addiction in the 1970s, he made a comeback in the 1980s but faced declining health. He passed away on February 10, 1988.
