He began his career as a drummer while honing his skills in audio engineering through German broadcasting. Thumann's transition into the recording industry started with a home studio set up in his family's bedroom, where he utilized his musical and technical expertise. His breakthrough came with the release of his first solo album American Express in 1979, which featured the hit single "Underwater". This track later gained posthumous recognition when it was included in the video game Grand Theft Auto IV. Thumann's second solo album, Andromeda, released in 1983, included the influential track "Sphinx", which inspired the theme for the television series Knight Rider. Throughout his career, Thumann also produced a series of successful "dog records" under the pseudonym 'Wonder Dog', with the single "Ruff Mix" peaking at number 31 on the UK Singles Chart in September 1982. His work involved groundbreaking synthesizers and studio equipment, contributing to the development of the SSL 4000 series consoles and integrating MIDI technology into his productions.
