Smashing Orange was an American shoegaze band formed in 1990 by siblings Rob and Sara Montejo, along with Rick Hodgson, Steve Wagner, and Tim Supplee. Their early sound saw them classified as shoegazing. Smashing Orange released the single "My Deranged Heart" in 1991, followed by a self-titled album the same year. They were signed to UK label Native Records and recorded a session for John Peel's BBC radio show in February 1992. Their full-length album The Glass Bead Game was released later that year, showcasing their signature sound. The band shifted towards a harder garage rock style with the release of No Return in the End in 1994 under MCA Records. However, a disappointing response to this album led to the band's split soon after its release. An anthology of their early work, 1991, was issued by Elephant Stone Records in 2005.
