Republika, a Polish rock band, originated in Toruń in 1978 as Res Publica, initially led by Jann Castor. After lineup changes, Grzegorz Ciechowski became the frontman, and the group emerged as Republika in 1981. Their distinctive black-and-white visual identity, new wave sound, and poetic lyrics quickly set them apart on the Polish rock scene. Their debut album Nowe sytuacje (1983) was followed by Nieustanne tango (1984) and the English-language album 1984. The band disbanded in 1986 following internal disagreements but reunited in 1990, later releasing Siódma Pieczęć (1993), Republika marzeń (1995), and Masakra (1998). Grzegorz Ciechowski's sudden death on December 22, 2001, brought the band's career to an end. Their final studio release, Ostatnia płyta (2002), was released posthumously and featured four completed songs from sessions for an unfinished album. Republika's influence has continued beyond music, with "Psy Pawłowa" appearing in the 2016 video game SUPERHOT.
