Alexander Gibson was born on February 11, 1926, in Motherwell, Scotland. He studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and later received a scholarship to the Royal College of Music in London. Gibson served as Assistant Conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra from 1952 to 1954 and was appointed musical director of Sadler's Wells in 1957. In 1959, he became the first Scottish principal conductor and artistic director of the Scottish National Orchestra, a role he held until 1984. He also founded Scottish Opera in 1962 and served as its music director until 1986. He received numerous honors, including two Grand Prix International de l’Academie Charles Cros Awards, a knighthood in 1977, and the Sibelius Medal in 1978. Gibson's notable albums include Grieg: Peer Gynt (1963) and Mozart: Don Giovanni Auszüge (2004). He died on January 14, 1995, at the age of 68.
