Anthony Rolfe Johnson, born on November 5, 1940 in Tackley, Oxfordshire, was a British operatic tenor. He initially pursued an agricultural degree before transitioning to singing. Johnson studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and made his major operatic debut as Count Vaudémont in Iolanta in 1973. In 1975, he debuted at Glyndebourne as Lensky in Eugene Onegin, winning the John Christie Award. Throughout his career, Johnson performed with major opera houses and collaborated with notable conductors. Notable recordings include Mozart's The Magic Flute and Britten’s Peter Grimes. He re-launched the Gregynog Music Festival in 1988 and was appointed Director of Singing Studies at the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in 1990. Johnson was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1992. He died on July 21, 2010 from complications related to Alzheimer's disease.
