Banyan, an art rock/alternative rock band with heavy jazz and funk influences, was formed in Los Angeles, California. The group was co-founded by Stephen Perkins, who previously played drums for Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros, alongside Emit Bloch. The core members included Nels Cline on guitar, Willie Waldman on trumpet, and Mike Watt (of Minutemen) on bass. Banyan released their self-titled debut album, Banyan, in 1997, followed by Anytime At All in 1999. Notable guest appearances on Anytime at All included Flea and John Frusciante from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The band's third album, Live At Perkins' Palace, was recorded at Stephen Perkins' home studio and released in 2004. Banyan's performances often featured improvisational elements and visual art by Los Angeles artist Norton Wisdom, who painted on a wet-erase board during shows.
