John Arthur Lanchbery was born on May 15, 1923, in London. He was an English conductor and composer who was famous for his ballet arrangements and for his ballet adaptations of canonical works. He began violin lessons and music composition at age eight and studied under Sir Henry Wood at the Royal Academy of Music after receiving a scholarship in 1942. His career started with conducting roles at the Metropolitan Ballet and Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet from 1948 to 1959, where he orchestrated notable ballets such as Somnambulism. He served as Principal Conductor of the Royal Ballet from 1959 to 1972. He arranged music for productions like La fille mal gardée and Don Quixote, which featured choreography by Frederick Ashton and Rudolf Nureyev. He later held positions with the Australian Ballet from 1972 to 1977 and American Ballet Theatre from 1978 to 1980. He passed away on February 27, 2003.
