Izumi Tateno, born on November 10, 1936, in Tokyo, is a Japanese pianist who studied at the Tōkyō Geijutsu Daigaku. He later became a professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. His career was significantly impacted by a stroke during a concert on January 9, 2002, which led to a temporary hiatus and subsequent paralysis of his right side. He returned to performing in August 2003, playing exclusively with his left hand. Following a recital of left-hand piano works in Japan that attracted significant media attention, he became an advocate for left-hand piano repertoire through performances, recordings, and commissions of new works. In 2012, he received the Tonen General Music Award.
