Koinonia was an American fusion jazz ensemble formed in 1980 by bassist Abraham Laboriel and drummer Bill Maxwell. The group included members Dean Parks, Alex Acuña, John Phillips, Hadley Hockensmith, and Harlan Rogers. The ensemble emerged from the instrumental group Sonlight, which performed as “The Disciples” while backing Andraé Crouch. The band performed its debut concert in 1980 at the Baked Potato in Los Angeles. Its first studio recording, More Than a Feelin’, appeared in 1982. The group recorded the live album Celebration in Scandinavia in 1984. In 1981, Justo Almario replaced Phillips on woodwinds and flute. The ensemble's discography included the studio recordings Frontline (1986) and the eponymous Koinonia (1989), which featured keyboardist Lou Pardini. The band became inactive in 1991. Following the split, Acuña and Almario established the Latin group Tulu.
