Pancake was a German rock band active during the 1970s and early 1980s. The predecessor of the group was the school band Nyrvana Pancake, formed in Winnenden near Stuttgart in 1971, which played psychedelic rock. The ensemble released its first single, “Open Your Eyes” (1972), before shortening its name to Pancake in 1974. The debut album, Roxy Elephant (1975), attracted attention in the Krautrock scene. The band underwent several lineup changes, including the addition of bassist Klaus Scharff, who later became known as a producer for Die Fantastischen Vier. Their album Out of the Ashes was released by the Blubberlips label in 1978, and its 2010 CD reissue featured a 16-minute live version of “Roxy Elephant” as a bonus track. The group followed with No Illusions (1980), which received favorable reviews and radio play before they disbanded in May 1981. Their catalog was later reissued on CD in 2008, 2010, and 2013 with unreleased studio tracks and live recordings.
