Formed by songwriter and vocalist Brian Brannigan, a lazarus soul released their first 3 albums, a lazarus soul, Graveyard of Burnt Out Cars and Through a Window in the Sunshine Room with a revolving cast of musicians.
Then, in 2011, the current lineup of Anton Hegarty, Julie Bienvenu and Joe Chester joined Brannigan for a tribute show to The Fall. They have now been together for 15 years, making 3 albums, Last of the Analogue Age (2014), The D They Put Between the R (2019) and No Flowers Grow In Cement Gardens (2024).
a lazarus soul have been much-lauded with their albums routinely topping end-of-year polls. Last of the Analogue Age was included in the Sunday Times list of the best Irish albums of all time while Cillian Murphy and Craig Charles featured The D They Put Between the R & L on BBC 6 Music. That album’s second single, Long Balconies, a tale of runaway gentrification and failed regeneration in Ireland, seemed to capture the zeitgeist of a country struggling to house its citizens and became an anthem of sorts for the band. It was featured in film The Francis Street Photographer and its lyrics were quoted by Dublin historian, Donal Fallon (Three Castles Burning), in his book 14 Henrietta Street.
Their 2024 release No Flowers Grow in Cement Gardens received critical acclaim and soared straight to No.1 on the Independent Albums Chart and to No.9 on the Official Irish Albums Chart on its first week of release. It received a Choice Music Prize nomination in the 2024 Irish Album of the Year category alongside Fontaines D.C, Orla Gartland, Sprints, Kneecap, Niamh Regan, NewDad, Curtisy, Róis and Silverbacks.
They have played sold-out headline shows at Vicar Street, The Button Factory, The Doolin Folk Festival, Royal Hospital Kilmainham and, in January 2026, their first headline show at St Patrick's Cathedral in Dublin as part of TradFest festival, and, at the National Concert Hall, Dublin in June 2023.
They have recently supported The Divine Comedy on their sold-out tour in France in prestigious venues such as La Salle Pleyel, Le Bikini, Le Rocher de Palmer, Le Stereolux and Le Mem, and in recent years, Irish legend Christy Moore has become a champion, covering Lemon 7s and Black & Amber at his shows and on his most recent album A Terrible Beauty.
