Tall Dwarfs, a New Zealand rock band formed in 1981 by Chris Knox and Alec Bathgate. The duo, who were former members of Toy Love, pioneered the lo-fi style of rock music. Their debut release was the EP Three Songs (1981), and for many years they primarily released EPs. Their first full-length album, Weeville, was released in 1990. The band's unique approach to percussion involved using household objects and hand claps instead of a traditional drummer. Notable albums include 3 EPs (1994), which featured listener-submitted rhythm tracks, and Stumpy (1997), credited to International Tall Dwarfs. Their discography also includes compilations such as Hello Cruel World and The Short and Sick of It. The band's influence has been cited by artists and groups including Guided by Voices, Jay Reatard, Superchunk, Elf Power, Neutral Milk Hotel, and Olivia Tremor Control.
