Monica Sinclair, born March 23, 1925, in Evercreech, England, was a British operatic contralto who studied at the Royal Academy of Music. She debuted in 1948 with the Carl Rosa Opera Company as Suzuki in Madama Butterfly. In 1949, she made her debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, in The Magic Flute, subsequently performing roles that included Maddalena in Rigoletto and the voice of the mother of Antonia in The Tales of Hoffmann. She also voiced the role of Nicklaus in the 1951 film The Tales of Hoffmann. Her recording career featured collaborations with artists who included Joan Sutherland, Luciano Pavarotti, and Maria Callas, and she recorded several Gilbert and Sullivan operas under the direction of Sir Malcolm Sargent, including H.M.S. Pinafore and The Mikado. She died on May 7, 2002, in London, England.
