Papas Fritas, an American indie rock band, formed in 1992 when Tony Goddess and Shivika Asthana met in high school. The duo later enrolled at Tufts University where they met Keith Gendel, completing the initial lineup. Their early releases included self-distributed cassette-only recordings such as "Careers for Culture Lovers" and "Retards/Cowboys". In 1994, Papas Fritas released their first proper single, "Friday Night", on Sunday Driver Records.The band's debut album, Papas Fritas, was released in October 1995 under Minty Fresh. They toured extensively with acts like the Flaming Lips and the Cardigans. Their second album, Helioself, followed in April 1997, accompanied by tours with Blur and Eels. The band's third LP, Buildings and Grounds, was released in March 2000. Papas Fritas disbanded in 2001.
