Credit to the Nation, a British hip hop group, was formed in the early 1990s by Matthew David Hanson (a.k.a. MC Fusion), Tyrone, and Kelvin in Wednesbury, West Midlands, England. The group initially gained attention for their fusion of conscious hip hop with political elements drawn from British left-wing and anarchist movements. Their breakthrough came with the release of “Call It What You Want” in 1993, a single that sampled Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. The track was initially released on Rugger Bugger Records but gained wider attention after being re-released by One Little Indian Records. Despite charting outside the Top 40 at number 57, it brought Credit to the Nation significant media coverage and led to a multi-album deal with One Little Indian, although not all planned albums were released. Throughout their career, Credit to the Nation released notable singles such as “Sowing the Seeds of Hatred” (1994), “Tacky Love Song” (1998), and “Daddy Always Wanted Me to Grow a Pair of Wings” (1995). Their debut album, Take Dis, released in 1993, featured contributions from Chumbawamba and incorporated a variety of musical styles. The band's biggest hit was “Teenage Sensation”, which reached number 24 on the UK Singles Chart in March 1994. Credit to the Nation also performed at major festivals such as Glastonbury and Reading. The group disbanded in 1998 but reformed in 2011, continuing to release music until their final disbandment.
