Posthum, a Norwegian black metal band from Nannestad, was founded in 2004 by Jon Kristian Skare and Morten Edseth. The group initially focused on developing their unique style in rehearsal spaces before releasing their debut album, Posthum, in 2009 via Folter Records. Later that year, they embarked on a European tour with Satyricon, Shining, and Dark Fortress. In 2012, Posthum released their second album, Lights Out, under Indie Recordings, followed by a Norwegian tour with Sòlstafir and Dunderbeist. The band's third album, The Black Northern Ritual, was released in 2014, featuring the single "To the Pits". In 2019, Posthum released their fourth album, Like Wildfire.
